Caretaker period

In the period preceding an election for the House of Representatives, the Australian Government assumes a caretaker role. It is important during that time that Australian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As this website is hosted by the Australian Signals Directorate, the site will be moderated from the time the House of Representatives is dissolved until after the election to ensure that political material is not placed on the site.

ASD is a vital member of Australia’s national security community. We work across the full spectrum of operations required of contemporary signals intelligence and security agencies. This includes intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations in support of the Australian Government and Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Captain Eric Nave

On 7 November 2024, Captain Eric Nave became the first Australian to be included in the US National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) Cryptologic Hall of Honor in recognition of his lifetime of high achievement in the cryptologic field.

ASD timeline

For 75 years, ASD has collected intelligence about foreign adversaries while keeping our own national secrets safe. Explore ASD’s history and trace its origins back to the Second World War, when Australian Navy, Army and Air Force personnel were brought together to intercept and decode radio signals.

ASD stories

The Australian Signals Directorate has a rich history. ASD can trace its origins back to the Second World War then was formed as a peacetime signals intelligence organisation in Albert Park, Melbourne. To learn more about ASD’s roots and beginnings, read some of our stories.
